Garments of Becoming: Memory, Clothing, and Philosophy
Garments of Becoming: Memory, Clothing, and Philosophy
Samenvatting
This thesis offers an alternative way of thinking about clothing - one that explores how and why garments hold memory. Drawing on the philosophical frameworks of Tim Ingold, Gilles Deleuze, and Jean Baudrillard, it challenges conventional views of clothing as symbols of identity or commodification. Instead, it positions clothing as active participants in personal narratives and memory making. In contrast to the fast-paced nature of contemporary fashion, this perspective introduces a sense of slowness, an intentional, reflective approach that deepens our relationship with what we wear. Garments then become a living archive of experience and emotion, inviting a more mindful and enduring connection between clothing and memory.
