Intensive agriculture relies heavily on synthetic fertilizers, causing resource depletion and environmental issues such as nutrient leaching. Biogas liquid digestate offers a nutrient-rich byproduct from anaerobic digestors as a circular alternative source for plant nutrients in closed-loop. Within the SIA Fieldlab Circular Fertilizers project, a digeponics (digestate-based hydroponics) nutrient film technique (NFT) crop production system was constructed to test the growth potential of mixed salt-tolerant and conventional crops and to assess nutrition parameters by using liquid digestate as the primary nutrient source.
