Samenvatting

This collective research project investigates the development of the FREE MODEL, an experimental museological framework conceived in response to emerging social, cultural, and institutional challenges of the early twenty-first century. Developed by four international students of the Reinwardt Academy Master's Programme in Museology, the research emerged from the recognition that individual research trajectories shared a common vision for a more participatory, interconnected, and people-oriented museological practice.

The project proposes an independent and flexible framework for fostering collaboration among artists, cultural institutions, communities, and broader networks of stakeholders. Through four interconnected perspectives—Art, Community, Virtuality, and Sustainability—it explores the conditions necessary for developing innovative forms of cultural mediation, participation, knowledge exchange, and partnership. The research argues that collaboration, participation, and networked forms of exchange are essential to the evolution of contemporary museological practice and examines how cultural institutions, artists, communities, and emerging digital networks can engage in more dynamic and mutually beneficial relationships.

Each perspective contributes a distinct dimension to the FREE MODEL: art as a transformative and experimental practice; community as the foundation for participation and social engagement; virtuality as a tool for communication, networking, and knowledge exchange; and sustainability as a framework for long-term cultural development and civic responsibility. Rather than functioning as separate components, these dimensions are understood as interdependent and collectively contribute to a flexible and evolving museological approach.

The research ultimately proposes the FREE MODEL as a conceptual framework for fostering collaboration, innovation, and active public engagement within contemporary cultural practice.
