The goal of this project is to investigate the feasibility and value of a modular tool system for the Roberine machine platform (seen in Figure 1). Currently, the Roberine is used as a mowing machine with a limited range of available tools. This may reduce its versatility compared to competing machines that can perform multiple tasks using interchangeable attachments. The project aims to determine whether additional tools and a modular system would provide value to customers and strengthen the market position of the Roberine. To achieve this, research is conducted into competitor products, existing tool carrier systems, user requirements, dealer insights, and technical considerations within Roberine.
The focus is on identifying which tools are most desirable, how a modular system would be used in practice, and what functional requirements such a system should meet. The results will form the foundation for the development of future tool extensions and potential interchangeable tool solutions for the Roberine.
The result of this project is a modular tool system for the Roberine that enables the use of interchangeable attachments on a single machine platform. The design was developed based on market research, stakeholder input, technical analysis, and engineering calculations to ensure that it meets both user requirements and the constraints of the existing Roberine platform.
The final design consists of a complete 3D model of the modular system (see Figure 2), including a newly developed lifting mechanism and mechanical coupling system, hydraulic quick couplings, and electrical connections. Together, these components allow tools to be attached and removed without modifications to the machine, creating a flexible platform for future tool development.
In addition to the CAD model, hydraulic schematics and supporting calculations were developed to validate the functionality of the system and support future implementation. The design is intended to increase the versatility of the Roberine by allowing a wider range of maintenance tasks to be performed with a single machine.
