Though the problem of water risks is growing and becoming more evident, there is a lack of structured information about how these risks are managed through the certification process.
While there are certain credits dedicated to managing water risks and implementing measures in regard to them in the systems like LEED, BREEAM and EDGE, these requirements are structured differently in each certification system and spread among different parts of manuals, technical documents and credits' requirements. Thus, it can be quite difficult to analyze how each system addresses certain risks such as flooding, stormwater management, indoor water use, etc. and how the requirements are applied in real life.
Moreover, the potential contribution of certification systems to climate adaptation and resilience in the built environment remains unclear. It is often underestimated that certification systems have certain capabilities and potential to be utilized when developing climate-related solutions and initiatives. Therefore, their potential is not exploited to its maximum extent in real-life projects.
Thereby, the mentioned above creates a number of challenges: • difficulties in comparing different certification systems, • uncertainty about which solution might be applicable for certain risks, • difficulty in applying certification requirements in practice, which results in the existence of the gap between the capability of certification systems to contribute to climate adaptation and water management in buildings and its implementation.
It becomes evident that there is a necessity to conduct structured comparative analysis, which would link water-related risks to certification systems and clarify the role of certification in solving climate change issues.
